Though the name of the city is pronounced as Sa-LINE today, its history would make sense with the common mispronunciation SA-line (as in salt water). Salt springs along with Saline River were recorded by sureveyors in the early 1800s. The first settler that stayed permanently in the area was reportedly a man named Leonard Miller. The land was surveyed by, and officially founded by, Orange Risdon in 1832. Through the years the settlement grew, and served farmers who lived in the surrounding townships. The village was incorporated in 1866 and the railroad came in 1870. Saline Michigan was declared a city in 1931.
